Open Access Pilates Archives - Christina Gadar

On May 25, 2021, Christina started a social media campaign on Instagram called Open Access Pilates Archives which shares Joseph Pilates' archival exercises with the global Pilates community.

Why would Joseph Pilates have taken the time to write, photograph, and film his work if he didn’t want the world to know about it? Christina Gadar’s attempts at sharing some of Joseph Pilates’ archival documentation, which is widely believed to be in the public domain, came at a great personal cost. In response, Christina decided to become a vessel for the work Joseph Pilates left for the Pilates community. Christina has created hundreds of videos of these lesser-known exercises documented by Joe. Christina also sought out Pilates teachers who own original Pilates equipment so that she could create a one-stop Pilates archive with photos of original equipment in addition to videos of archival Pilates exercises. As a tribute to her Pilates mentor, Christina personalized her archive by infusing her experiences learning the Method from Joe’s student, Romana Kryzanowska. It is Christina’s sincere hope that openly sharing her observations and questions about our collective Pilates history will encourage the next generation of Pilates instructors to do the same
