"The very first time I worked on Gratz, I immediately understood why the Pilates method and the art of teaching classically made perfect sense on Gratz apparatus"
- Cheryl Maher, THE PILATES METHOD
The Pilates Method Studio
The PILATES METHOD is the only Metro Detroit area studio dedicated to teaching classical Pilates. The Pilates Method is a clean, modern space fully equipped with Gratz only apparatus. Our studio is warm and light filled and during our cold Michigan winters, we can warm up by our fireplace. But when everyone is breaking a sweat, we can open our large windows for a fresh breeze all year around! We have created a supportive, friendly environment, where our instructors are family and clients feel a sense of community. Our doors opened July 1, 2016. Located in beautiful upscale Birmingham, Michigan, only steps away from cafés, shopping and fantastic restaurants. We are a boutique studio offering privates, duets and small group semi-private sessions.
About Cheryl Maher (Studio Owner)
Cheryl has over 20 years experience teaching Pilates. She completed her first full certification in a contemporary method and taught through the late 90’s. In 2003 she began a career in the corporate fitness world. Cheryl was a single mom of four kids, managed a studio, taught 30-35 hours a week and still continued her passion for learning. Her desire to uncover a deeper understanding of the work led her to a classical certification taught by Sonjé Mayo through Peak Pilates and eventually became a teacher trainer, mentored by Sonjé. Cheryl lights up, “Sonjé has inspired the classical method with her accuracy of the work and stories of Joe Pilates but it was her knowledge as a physical therapist gave true detail.” The game changer was when she said, “Only use GRATZ! It is das beste!” Cheryl quickly understood how the work was connected using Gratz apparatus. “I am glad I’ve used different equipment and methods. I can speak authentically, there’s no comparison to Gratz apparatus and teaching classically.” Cheryl continues to take lessons and workshops with Sonjé, Dana Santi, Jay Grimes, KRN, Chris Robinson and is currently enrolled in Dorothee Vanderwalle’s M.A.T. Pilates certification.
About Emily Sansiri (Senior Instructor)
Emily is a classically certified Pilates Instructor from Los Angeles, CA. She trained on the original Gratz apparatus by Nicole Briggs, owner of Strong Body Pilates in Los Angeles and graduate of Jay Grimes's Masters Program at Vintage Pilates Studio. Emily began her Pilates journey 6 years ago and quickly fell in love with the practice. "I have been physically active my whole life, but noticed the most changes in my body after just 2 months of Pilates because for the first time I was connecting my mind to the movement. I was activating and engaging muscles that I had never worked before and since then I have been hooked!" Emily has continued her education through various workshops and will begin Chris Robinson’s program in 2019.
About Colleen Dallas
Colleen took a hiatus from her years practicing law to stay home with her little boys. She later took the leap to change careers and is completing her comprehensive classical certification through Peak Pilates. Colleen understands the challenges of looking after your body while leading a hectic and demanding lifestyle. Colleen endeavors to always give instruction with the appropriate focus, be it to relax, energize, concentrate or just work hard!
About Dana Andrews
Dana started Pilates training in 2003 to expand her ability to increase abdominal strength, mobility, and flexibility in her clients. She discovered that the classical Pilates methodology helped heal her own shoulder and back issues and regain lower abdominal strength post a Cesarean section. Dana has trained through Core Dynamics and Peak Pilates in the classical method and brings her vast teaching experience plus energy, humor, and passion into her classes and private sessions.
Annie Kreha (Apprentice Instructor)
Annie has been studying this past year at The Pilates Method and is excited to be working towards her comprehensive classical training by the end of 2019, following her apprenticeship beginning this spring. Her sister is an athletic trainer working with dancers and teaches anatomy at Purchase College. Her sister-in-law owns a Pilates studio in New York. So of course, it seemed the natural next step into Pilates. After her first class, she fell in love and has been practicing every chance she gets since!
The true work of Pilates unfolds using Gratz apparatus. Sometimes I catch myself just starring at the beauty of each handmade piece. The craftsmanship and quality of Gratz apparatus, is an absolute work of art.
