" Joseph invented it. Romana taught it. Gratz made it happen!
- Therese Stark, Owner and Instructor
Pilates Movement is a fully equipped studio using authentic customized systems invented by Joseph Pilates. Pilates Movement teaches the highest standard of certification, “Romana’s Pilates IITP,” ensuring the studio provides authentic, safe, and optimum goal attainment for its clients. Pilates Movement works closely with Vita Physical Therapy & Fitness, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the Historic Third Ward.
Pilates Movement is owned and operated by Therese Stark. Therese was fortunate to attend a NY Pilates Certification program in Evanston, IL, where she was privileged to be taught and certified by world-renowned teacher, Romana Kryzanowska, under the tutelage of Sari Mejia Santo and Juanita Lopez.
Therese continues to attend annual certification conferences and workshops with the world’s leading teachers in the industry. As a student, Therese was trained exclusively on Gratz equipment. Before opening her own business, she experienced the method on manufactured versus custom made apparatus and felt the lack of continuity. She believes the technique and integrity of the system designed by Joseph Pilates, together with the apparatus crafted by Gratz, has contributed to the success of her work.
Therese opened her business in 2003 with one Reformer and one Wunda Chair. As the studio expanded, Therese added four Studio Wall Units and four Small Barrels to her inventory. Therese believes that the services she offers at Pilates Movement allow her to successfully offer cost effective training to her clients, while educating them about the importance of resistance using the key principles of Pilates – services she feels are not always offered by Health Clubs.
Therese is dedicated to teaching the integrity of Pilates and says, “Teaching a program designed with one’s strengths and weaknesses is the most rewarding to me.” Therese offers personal one-on-one training, group mat classes, and a variety of apparatus classes.
Romana partnered and collaborated with Donald Gratz to preserve the integrity of their work and duplicated the apparatus based on the dimensions and specifications from Joseph Pilates. Why should we even question it? Romana told us, “It’s called apparatus because it’s not a machine; you work the apparatus, a machine works you.” Today, powerful results are still being achieved thanks to the people who created the system decades ago.
