"I travel all around the world teaching Pilates, and when I walk into another studio,
and I see and feel the Gratz apparatus, when I lay down on the reformer, I’m home. It’s an amazing feeling."
Atlas Pilates is located on the ground floor of a high-rise in Seattle’s vibrant and densely populated Belltown neighborhood. Our calendar is filled with Pilates clients from all walks of life who work with our experienced staff instructors in our spacious purpose-built Pilates studio. We provide Private and Semi-Private Pilates Lessons, and popular Saturday morning Mat (Plus) classes. An independent physical therapy clinic on-site specializes in sports injury rehabilitation, and many patients progress into Pilates reconditioning. We’re a destination frequented by local Pilates teachers seeking to work with our instructors, do fun Semi-Privates with their peers, and participate in our collaborative Instructors Workgroups. Professional Pilates instructors from around the world visit to participate in our Pilates educational programming, which includes three annual Pilates Systems Seminars and our popular CPE Weekend. The business maintains high standards, endeavors to provide great customer service, and strives to be a place where others discover the joy we find in this meaningful work.
Studio owner and operator Teresa Shupe, a former professional modern dancer with a black belt in Kung Fu, has studied with many of the best Classical Pilates teacher trainers in the world. She was tested and certified by Romana Kryzanowska in 1999 and has been teaching full-time since. She’s created and maintains our well organized studio staffed with conscientious Pilates Instructors. She teaches daily, and is always focused on efficiently helping clients reach their fitness goals through carefully tailored individual Pilates workouts.
Our Director of Education, Lori Coleman-Brown, a licensed physical therapist, was personally trained by Romana Kryzanowska in New York and has been teaching Pilates professionally since 1986. Her Atlas Pilates teaching calendar is filled with clients and local instructors. She travels globally from her home base in Seattle to teach her popular workshops and to present at Pilates conferences. She produces, and continually refines, original Pilates educational programming throughout the year, and is actively developing the next generation of high caliber Classical Pilates instructors in our rigorous, state licensed, Pilates Teacher Training Program.
Atlas Pilates instructors provide personalized Pilates instruction deeply rooted in Pilates principles, but avoid being dogmatic or formulaic. Our instructors are focused on the smart and sensitive employment of The Pilates Method to get positive results. Our approach to the work is specific and scientific. That’s why we’ve chosen to equip the studio exclusively with Gratz Pilates apparatus. We’ve been able to achieve truly transformative results using Gratz. In our experience, no other brand of apparatus both supports and challenges a body as well as Gratz. In the Atlas Pilates studio you won’t find a bank of wall units, but you will find lots of Wunda Chairs, an Electric Chair and a Baby Chair, aluminum Gratz Reformers, Ladder Barrels, High Mats, Cadillacs, and even a Guillotine. We have all the important props and smaller tools designed by Joseph Pilates, and we keep the Foot Correctors particularly busy. We believe a key difference in our studio from many others, is that we use all of the apparatus. Our instructors have the entire Gratz toolkit at their disposal, they are well trained in the efficient use of it, and they possess the good judgment and creativity to meet the needs of the body in front of them.
