Simona Cipriani | Art of Control

Welcome to The Art of Control Pilates Studio in Stamford, Connecticut. I’m Simona Cipriani, owner of The Art of Control Pilates Studio and Educational Director of The Art and Science of Contrology Pilates Instructor Training.

We are thrilled to announce that we have received our new Archive Reformer by Gratz Industries! I would like to take this opportunity to go over the differences between the Archive Reformer versus other Gratz Reformers we have at the studio. To "Test Drive" the Gratz Archive Reformer, you can book your visit by calling (203) 973 7262 or visit our website at www.artofcontrol.com.

Let's go over the noticeable differences when performing the basic reformer sequence.

As soon as the client lays down to center the body on the Reformer, we notice the shoulder blocks are slightly lower. The upholstery of the carriage is firmer, which enables the client to have better feedback with the landmarks of the spine and back body when on supine position. The handles of the arm straps are slightly squared to provide more room for the hand and wrist. This shape allows clients with wrist or hand sensitivity to hold in a more comfortable manner.

The padding covering the footbar is not as thick which gives better feedback during footwork – it is not too soft or too padded. In addition, the angle of the foot bar is a little bit lower, which is great for clients who are tight, or have issues at the hip and knee joints. When the stomach massage series is performed, though still challenging, the angle between the ankles, knees and hip joints gives more room to position the body into proper form and maintaining it while executing the movement. The foot bar position reduces the need for second gear at times, which subsequently, helps to maintain the flow. The non-sliding pad on the corner of the base are very helpful for exercises like the Snake and Twist as well as Russian Split.

Some teachers may not be aware that the Archive Reformer has two sets of setup attachments under the carriage. This allows placement of the carriage to be customized to be a bit closer or farther away from the spring bar by about 1". This makes a big difference in the tension of the springs and mostly in the way the hooks attach to the eye of the spring. When there is a “slack” in the tension, it can be dangerous causing the springs to detach on their own.

The springs are a bit lighter – they are easy on the way out, without having too much pressure on the shoulders; but the client has to work harder on the way in requiring more control and body engagement to pull the carriage back “home."

For the Short Box series – the handles on the side of the box are easier to hold as it allows you to pull them a little upward. For clients with shorter arms, this is a great feature, as it allows the person to perform the round back while holding the handles on the side, making it safer for the beginner client.

I hope this helps you make a good decision when purchasing your piece of equipment. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

See you next time!

About Art of Control

After graduating, Simona managed the Pilates Studio at Purchase for Romana and a friendship was kindled that would last for decades. After her years of managing the SUNY Purchase Pilates Studio, Simona set off on her own to open her own Studio and travel with Romana assisting her in Workshops both locally and across the globe. Seeing the Pilates program at SUNY Purchase fall dormant and Simona recognizing the importance of reaching out to a younger generation she petitioned the school to start the program up again. With Romana’s blessing The Art of Control at SUNY Purchase was birthed. This time not just as a class for Dancers, but as a fully credited Certificate Program issued by SUNY Purchase. The Certification Program has blossomed as “The Art and Science of Contrology Pilates Certification Program.” It incorporates Mat and full Equipment Certifications in the States and abroad!
