Gratz Industries is proud to support Island Dolphin Care developed and operated by Romana trained instructor Kerri Bender. This donation of Gratz Pilates apparatus to Kerri's initiative is aimed at helping Island Dolphin care and the veterans from the Wounded Warrior Project to work on Gratz Pilates apparatus. We believe this is a great continuation of the legacy of Joseph Pilates and a wonderful application of the work. We encourage our friends and family in the Gratz Pilates Community to support Kerri and the members of our Armed Forces and Island Dolphin Care.
Joe Pilates was born in Germany in 1883 to a prize-winning gymnast father and a mother who was a naturopath. Throughout childhood he suffered varying ailments and began dedicating his life to improving his physical health using Yoga, Gymnastics and Qi Gong. He began his adult career as a self-defense instructor for Scotland Yard in the early 1900’s until British authorities, during the outbreak of World War I, interned him along with other German citizens in an internment camp.
During this involuntary break, he began to intensively develop his concept of an integrated, comprehensive system of physical exercise and trained his fellow inmates in fitness and exercises and later refined his ideas for exercise for wounded veterans confined to hospital beds. He rigged springs to hospital beds, enabling patients to exercise against resistance, maintaining and developing muscle tone. It is said that these inmates, who trained under Joseph Pilates, survived the 1918 flu pandemic due to their physical conditioning.
Today Pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen, and correct muscular imbalance - which makes it an incredibly safe and effective method of physical therapy geared towards retraining and repairing the body and restoring muscle tone. Custom designed apparatus, engineered by Joe Pilates, is used during training in order to support and create resistance and length to aid in this process of recovery, despite disability or physical obstacle.
With the generous donation from GRATZ PILATES, the original manufacturer of authentic Pilates engineered apparatus, Island Dolphin Care is now able to expand its program to include not only Dolphin Assisted Therapy, but authentic Pilates training to veterans and our special needs families as well.
Island Dolphin Care is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization specializing in Dolphin Human therapy programs. For over 20 years they have been providing programs to individuals with special needs and more recently to hundreds of veterans wounded in combat each year. Your donations to this program will provide the funding necessary to offer supportive instruction to those in need.
We are grateful for your support!
