Class and Workshop
This workshop takes a critical look at how to achieve an essential aspect of the Pilates method. The initial body scan gives a teacher a lot of information, particularly the position of the pelvis.
Pilates is designed to correct and balance the body, but that can be a lengthy process. Weakness and inflexibility require incisive attention and client awareness early in the training.
The Tower/Cadillac workout was developed as an invaluable method of strengthening, lengthening and focusing the client on their particular needs. The correct neural connection can then be applied to the Mat and Reformer, which will facilitate the flow.
Being Creative on the Spine Corrector The Spine Corrector is probably one of the most under-used pieces of accessory Pilates apparatus. As the name implies, it is a superb tool to correct the spine by strengthening, lengthening and creating awareness.
Transferring the Mat class on the Spine Corrector is challenging and very demanding. The shape of the barrel stimulates proprioception and provides excellent neural feedback. This neural connection is extremely valuable and undoubtedly enhances one’s Pilates practice.
Cleaning up the Reformer This mini-workshop will address the precision and attention to detail that Joe Pilates demanded on the reformer.
Although Joe did not adhere to an order, he was adamant about how to get on and off the reformer correctly, applying the correct transitions with economy of movement, and performing each exercise with the utmost concentration and intensity. Intended to help teachers understand progression, provide good imagery cues and to develop the teacher’s critical eye.
For certified Pilates instructors. (6 Peak CECs and PMA credits.)
Cost: $400.00 ($350.00 before August 1st, 2018)
Sonje was introduced to Joseph Pilates and his method of “Contrology” as a young professional dancer in New York City in 1965. As a physical therapist, she realized this method was a means to make her a better, stronger dancer. This proved to be correct and Sonje is eternally grateful to Joe for that gift. Sonje’s dream was to create the first contemporary dance company in South Africa. On her return to SA, Sonje found that “Contrology” was the most accessible method to train the wealth of raw black talent.
In 1976, Sonje formed the first multi-racial dance company at the height of the ‘Apartheid’ era. Her only regret is that she never had the opportunity to tell Joe that how effectively she managed to mold dancers using the Pilates Mat method. Sonje is a Pilates Master Instructor based in Nashville, Tennessee. She fervently believes the following: “I received the best foundation from Joe Pilates and Martha Graham, but I am still learning every day.”
