Saturday, April 28th, 2018

Time: 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Moses’s Favorite Lessons from Romana taught by Moses Urbano
It was almost 20 years ago (in 1999) that Moses completed his Pilates certification under the direction of Romana Kryzanowska. Moses assisted Romana on her teaching tours around the world, and he was featured in the film “Romana on Pilates: The Legacy Edition”, in which a small group of Romana’s trusted proteges gathered for an intimate Pilates session.

In this 3-hour workshop, Moses will share his understanding of Romana’s philosophy and teaching. You’ll hear anecdotes, you’ll move, and you’ll deepen your understanding of Pilates, as passed down from Joe, to Romana, to Moses.

“Romana taught me ‘Contrology’ – that’s what Joseph Pilates called his work. I see it is an art form of movement and believe it is the best way to naturally cleanse the body of impurities and replenish it with vibrant energy. It also happens to be a great way to exercise.”

Sunday, April 29th, 2018

Time: 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Find the “Double Leg Pull” in All of Pilates taught by Jay Grimes
Jay Grimes says when you get down to it, Joe believed there is only one exercise in Pilates: the Double Leg Pull. You can find that movement hidden in every exercise in the Pilates repertoire and Jay will help guide you into experiencing that idea in your body.

In this Mat-focused workshop, Jay will demonstrate how to do a “true” Double Leg Pull. And how, through understanding this movement, you can find profound connection and tackle any exercise that is thrown your way.

Time: 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Drill Your Reformer taught by: Sandy Shimoda
Sandy will show how to improve your Reformer workout by approaching it like a drill. The Reformer workout is meant to be aerobic, it is meant to improve stamina. When done correctly, it is a beautiful demonstration of ease and flow — while being a powerful and challenging practice.

Through repetition, you will explore fun ways to build strength, coordination and connection in your Center. Be prepared to work!

About Jay Grimes

Jay Grimes began his studies with Joe Pilates in the mid-sixties, and after Joe’s death continued with Joe’s wife, Clara, for another 10 years until her death. Jay began teaching in the original 8th Ave studio in New York and has since taught all over the world. Jay danced professionally, ballet and Broadway for 18 years, and never had an injury. This he attributes entirely to Pilates. Jay is valued in the Pilates community for his experience, humility and integrity in maintaining the work of Joe Pilates. Over the years Jay’s clients have ranged from stars of Broadway and Hollywood, music and opera, to politicians, businessmen and housewives, and Olympic athletes.

Jay does not take on new clients, but he offers regular workshops and master classes, locally and around the world (some are also offered as live, online feeds). Jay directs and teaches THE WORK—Vintage Pilates’ Master’s Program for certified teachers.

About Sandy Shimoda

Sandy is the owner of Vintage Pilates in West Los Angeles, a studio dedicated to teaching Pilates the way Joe intended it. Students and teachers from around the globe have made the studio a destination and Sandy enjoys finding creative ways to make Vintage Pilates accessible. Under the direction of Jay Grimes, Sandy operates two Masters level training programs for certified teachers of all disciplines. At Vintage Pilates she aims to bring teachers together in a supportive community that encourages a deeper study and practice of Contrology, looking beyond the exercises to understand the entire method and philosophy of Joe Pilates.

Having taught movement for over 30 years, Sandy has a keen understanding of the body. She is best known for her “pleasant but powerful”, “creative but clear” approach to teaching. Clients often comment on her ability to positively transform people—with her hands, with her words, and with her belief in them. Teachers describe her as possessing a “wisdom” that encourages deeper understanding and independent thinking.

Sandy has studied Pilates with Lori Coleman-Brown, Dorothee Vandewalle, Romana Kryzanowska and Jay Grimes and is grateful to each of them for their individual brilliance and the generosity of their teaching. A perpetual student, Sandy has also received training in related areas such as Thai Yoga Massage, Reiki, Rice Release and Yoga which have developed her intuitive and tactile approach to teaching. Sandy holds both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Business Administration.
